paru en mai aux Éditions du Mouton, relatent les aventures de
Mister Oli depuis sa création en 1992 sous le nom de "professeur Nimbus".
Du savant universel, Mister Oli est peu à peu devenu le
technicien qui sait. Avec ses instruments d'observations infaillibles
et son véhicule très rapide, il nous entraîne de la
science ultime (il a percé le secret de l'énergie
zéro) au savoir technologique de pointe avec son aspirateur
bionique. Aidé de son chihuahua, il a dû affronter les abominables petits nains expansionistes (les Dian's du 39 rue Georges Bizet), les gros animaux, les petits (Krouki l'écureuil méchant), le singe, les ornithorynques, le moumouth, le lapin flou, le mouton net, le chat chauve et autres animaux non identifiés comme cette fille qui se gave de brocolis pendant que Mister Oli répare |
la machine à laver (page 45). Mais il doit également lutter contre les faussaires qui prétendent enseigner l'alpha et l'omega à l'université du Mirail à sa place, contre le chevalier de Noël, et surtout contre CKC, le musicien érudit et habile dont il prendra la place comme technicien universel au savoir illimité. Sa science étant indiscutable il ne supporte pas l'indifférence d'un public médiocre et rien ne l'irrite plus que l'on remette en cause ses découvertes. Quiconque se vexera avant lui s'en |

mortel. Sans cesse contrarié, Mister Oli se vexe en effet pour un rien, pour une bouse de yack sur le tapis comme pour une poussière sur le nez du chihuahua. Il se vexe comme le poulpe qui apparaît furtivement dans la préparation culinaire de Mamie Frida. Cet individu rare occupe néanmoins 26 pages sur 76 et s'impose comme le principal personnage du livre, non parce qu'il est envahissant comme un Dian's mais parce qu'il est indispensable. million years ago, a submarine slump burried the animals of the fauna
of the Burgess Shale in fine particles of mud. These soft-bodied
animals that should have decayed very fast were protected from oxygen
without being crushed and thus preserved amazingly. Now located in the Yoho National Park in British Columbia, the Burgess Shale was discovered in 1909 by Charles Doolittle Walcott, director of the Smithsonian Institution [2] in Washington where most unburried fossils are now stored. The Burgess Shale was the first discovered fauna following the Cambrian Explosion [3]. 540 million years ago, life that had been limited to microscopic organisms, suddenly diversified into macroscopic animals. Walcott's first description of these fossils forced all observed animals into known groups, a methodology qualified as the "shoehorn" by Steven Jay Gould [4]. Walcott always considered that all the species of the Burgess Shale had evolved and improved to adapt to geophysical changes. Until the end of the 1970s, evolution was seen as a process of constant diversification and |
improvement, as a tree having more and more branches.![]() Marrella splendens, the most common arthropod found in the Burgess Shale, is the ancestor of no currently living group. (max. length 2 cm) At the end of the 1970s, Harry Whittington, Derek Briggs and Simon Conway Morris of the University of Cambridge reinvestigated the fossils finding tri-dimensional structures whereas Walcott had only interpreted them as completely flattened by the pressure of sediments. Whittington and his students discovered that a lot of the Burgess Shale species could not be assigned to any known group. This discovery completely changed the vision scientists had of evolution. The animals of the |
Burgess Shale were not primitive but specialized and adapted to their
environment and a lot of them disappear without evolving into any known
group. The tree of evolution soon became a severely pruned shrub.
Evolution is now
considered as a process of random decimation, the surviving species not
being the best but the most
lucky.![]() Opabinia regalis, a rare animal in the Burgess fauna, has not been assigned to any extinct or current living group (max. length 8 cm).
