This is a sport utility vehicle. It is not limited to Sunday morning short rides when there is a nice weather. It is designed for in-town commuting and to resist the automobile peril.

Vélo

When I started looking for handlebars, I was confronted to the hostility of salespeople who had nothing for me and stated it was a bad idea, even for commuting:
too high handlebards would be a problem when going uphill because the body would hit the handlebars
handlebars might tip over when breaking too hard
air friction would slow me down
an important part of the weight of the body would be transfered to the seat and would hurt my bum more than with normal handlebars.
Finally I found handlebars, I changed cables and housings that were not long enough and I tested.
All 4 previous statements are wrong
:
the height of the handlebars is not a problem when going uphill
if the handlebars are well positionned, they to not tip over even when breaking hard
I could raise the seat and I am able to go faster in spite of air friction that is not very important in-town because of low speed
the weight of the body transfered to the seat is not transfered to the perineum but to more fleshy parts that are used to chairs. As a result it hurts less.
Moreover, my arms and my shoulders do not hurt anymore.

I have been testing this bike in Vancouver since Spring 2003. In the beginning, people were making remarks because it was the only bike in that style. A year later, bikes with wide or high handlebars are more common.

The rear basket, very much envied as well, allows me to carry 20 kg (44 lbs) of freight.
